Emeralds

Emeralds are a gemstone variety of beryl, a mineral. Their intense green color forms from trace elements in the stone, such as chromium and vanadium. Emeralds can feature imperfections like small fractures or trapped water, but these factors do not detract from the value as they might for other gems.

The general consensus among gemologists is that emeralds must feature a deep green to be classified as such. However, the exact definition of a green color that is “too light” to be an emerald is debated. The rich green color is likely what attracts people to the stone and has earned the gem an important place throughout history.

The oldest emeralds are from South Africa and are 2.97 billion years old, according to the GIA. Evidence shows these stones were sold in Babylonian markets over 4,000 years ago. The first-known emerald mines were located in Egypt and used as early as 3,500 BC.

Beyond human history, emeralds have been referenced in various religions and mythologies. In Hebrew tradition, an emerald is one of four precious stones gifted to King Solomon to signify his power over all creation. In Greek mythology, Hermes gifted a large emerald to Aphrodite to win her affection.

Today, emeralds are primarily mined in Colombia and Zambia, but can be found in other countries. Emeralds are the birthstone for May.

Emeralds have had various meanings throughout history. Egyptians believed the stone could cure eye diseases and represented fertility and rebirth. Other cultures viewed the gem as having healing properties against poison, infection, and dysentery.

Emeralds have also been viewed as mystical talismans, and some societies believed the stone sharpened wit and memory. In the Hindu religion, it is believed to be a worthy gift for the god Krishna. In return, Krishna is thought to reward the gift-giver with “Knowledge of the Soul and the Eternal.”
