About The Intrepid Wendell
Bespoke Jewelry for Lives That Cannot Be Repeated (more on our bespoke process)
The Intrepid Wendell creates bespoke jewelry for collectors, leaders, and families who understand that objects can carry meaning across generations.
We are not a retail jewelry store.
There are no display cases and no inventory waiting to be purchased. Every piece is conceived, designed, and fabricated for a single person or family.
At The Intrepid Wendell, jewelry begins not with gemstones but with story, identity, and memory.
The result is jewelry that cannot be duplicated because the life behind it cannot be duplicated.
A Private Bespoke Jewelry Process
Every commission begins with conversation.
Before any gemstone is selected or design drawn, we spend time understanding the story behind the piece. These conversations explore the people, experiences, and moments that deserve to be carried forward.
From these discussions, we develop a design brief—a narrative document that guides the entire creation process.
This brief shapes every decision:
- gemstone selection
- proportions and geometry
- symbolic design elements
- materials and techniques
At The Intrepid Wendell, the design brief is not a marketing exercise. It is the foundation of the work.
It transforms jewelry from ornament into legacy object.
Rare Gemstones Sourced Around the World
Extraordinary jewelry requires materials that are equally extraordinary.
Rather than purchasing stones from wholesalers, Daniel Boettcher and his team travel globally to source rare gemstones and precious materials directly from their origins.
The Intrepid Wendell regularly visits:
- The Tucson Gem and Mineral Show, the world’s most important gemological gathering
- Vicenzaoro, Europe’s leading gold and jewelry exhibition
- The gemstone markets of Bangkok, where many of the finest colored stones in the world circulate
Our sourcing also extends to pearl waters in French Polynesia and Australia, gemstone mines, private dealers, and independent cutters across multiple continents.
In a typical year, the team travels hundreds of thousands of air miles in pursuit of stones worthy of our clients.
Every gemstone entering our atelier is evaluated by Gemological Institute of America (GIA) certified gemologists, ensuring authenticity, rarity, and exceptional quality.
When a stone is presented to a client, it has already been personally handled, examined, and approved.
The Art of Custom Jewelry Design
The creation of a bespoke piece unfolds through a collaborative process between client and atelier.
1. Private consultation. A conversation to understand the story, symbolism, and intention behind the commission.
2. Concept development. Designers translate the narrative brief into sketches and digital renderings.
3. Design refinement. Adjustments ensure that the final design reflects the client’s vision perfectly.
4. Master craftsmanship. Experienced artisans fabricate the piece using both traditional goldsmithing and modern precision techniques.
5. Presentation. The finished jewel is revealed—a culmination of the story, materials, and craftsmanship behind it.
This process produces jewelry that belongs not to a market category but to a single individual.
Jewelry for Milestones and Legacy
Many clients first arrive at The Intrepid Wendell during pivotal moments in life.
Commissions frequently mark:
- engagement and marriage
- anniversaries
- birth of children
- personal achievements
- family transitions
Others bring inherited pieces—antique diamonds, gemstones, or heirlooms—and ask us to transform them into contemporary works of art while preserving their lineage.
In these moments, jewelry becomes more than adornment.
It becomes a vessel for memory and continuity.
Craft Traditions From Around the World
The Intrepid Wendell also travels globally to study and collaborate with master craftsmen whose techniques have been refined across generations.
Our team has worked with artisans practicing traditions such as:
- Japanese Urushi lacquer
- historic chain-making methods
- specialized gemstone cutting
- traditional goldsmithing techniques
These encounters allow our clients access to craftsmanship rarely seen in contemporary jewelry.
Each commission may draw upon multiple cultures and craft traditions, resulting in pieces that carry the accumulated knowledge of centuries.
Ethical Sourcing and Integrity
Jewelry that celebrates love or legacy must rest on ethical foundations.
The Intrepid Wendell works with mines, cutters, and dealers who maintain responsible extraction practices and fair labor conditions. Transparency and traceability guide every sourcing decision.
Clients can wear their pieces knowing the materials were obtained with integrity.
Shine: Stories That Become Jewelry
The philosophy behind The Intrepid Wendell extends beyond the atelier.
On the podcast Shine: Life Perspectives from a Bespoke Jeweler, Daniel Boettcher speaks with remarkable individuals about the experiences that shaped their lives.
After each conversation, he creates a bespoke jewelry design inspired entirely by that guest’s story.
The result is a physical object that captures the essence of a human life.
Guests have included artists, judges, Olympic athletes, and creative leaders. Their stories reinforce the central belief of The Intrepid Wendell:
Every life carries a story worth honoring.
An Expedition for the Right Stone
Most people never visit the places where their gemstones originate. They never meet the miners, cutters, and craftsmen who first bring those materials to life.
The Intrepid Wendell makes that journey on behalf of its clients.
When a finished piece is presented, it carries the landscapes where its materials were discovered, the traditions that shaped its craftsmanship, and the story that inspired its creation.
It is not simply jewelry.
It is a life translated into form.

Wendell
(Honorary) Chairman of the Board
His travels around the globe with Dan made him “intrepid” even before the company was founded. Some people believe Wendell to be a stuffed plush rat. However, according to criteria written in the charming story of The Velveteen Rabbit, he is not filled with stuffing at all. He has certainly become real.
Our Travel
For most jewelers, sourcing materials is simple. A call is placed to a dealer. A shipment arrives.
At The Intrepid Wendell, the process begins with a plane ticket.
Our founder, Daniel Boettcher, and his team travel the world in search of gemstones, materials, and craftsmanship worthy of a truly bespoke commission. These journeys take us to places few jewelers ever visit — remote mines, private dealers’ offices, small cutting ateliers, and artisan workshops scattered across continents.
The finest materials rarely appear in convenient places.
The Intrepid Wendell goes where they are found.
Our team regularly walks the floors of the world’s most important gemological gatherings, including the legendary Tucson Gem and Mineral Show in Arizona, Vicenzaoro (
Vicenzaoro) in Italy — Europe’s premier gold and jewelry exhibition — and the renowned gemstone markets of Bangkok, where some of the world’s most exceptional colored stones quietly change hands.
In each destination, the objective is the same: to discover something extraordinary for our clients.
When a gemstone is presented to you by The Intrepid Wendell, it has not arrived through a catalog or wholesale portal. We have already held it in our hands, turned it beneath the light, and judged its character. We have met the miner who unearthed it or the cutter who spent days perfecting its proportions.
Every material we bring back carries a sense of place — a connection to the landscape, the culture, and the hands that shaped it.
Before any stone becomes part of a commission, our in-house Gemological Institute of America (GIA) certified gemologists evaluate it with exacting care, confirming its authenticity and ensuring that it meets the exceptional standards our clients expect.
Yet gemstones are only part of the story.
The Intrepid Wendell also travels in search of craft traditions that have nearly disappeared from the modern world. These explorations have led us into workshops where centuries-old techniques are still practiced by master artisans. Among them is the Japanese art of Urushi lacquerwork, where tree resin is transformed through painstaking layers into surfaces of extraordinary depth and luminosity. We have studied historic chain-making techniques and sought out specialized goldsmiths whose knowledge has been passed quietly through generations.
These encounters allow our clients access to something rare in contemporary jewelry: living craft heritage.
Each commission may draw upon traditions, materials, and techniques gathered from multiple corners of the world, resulting in a piece that reflects the accumulated wisdom of cultures spanning centuries.
There is also something deeply personal about these journeys. Daniel has traveled to more than one hundred countries, and each destination has shaped the way we think about design. Inspiration rarely arrives on demand. More often it appears unexpectedly — in unfamiliar streets, in conversations conducted across languages, or in the moment when a newly discovered stone catches the afternoon sun.
That is why no two pieces from The Intrepid Wendell ever resemble one another.
Every commission is nourished by a different discovery.
Over time, these travels have created an international network of miners, cutters, goldsmiths, and independent dealers who share a commitment to excellence. These relationships are not transactional. They are built through years of repeated visits, shared meals, and a deep mutual respect for the craft.
Through this network, The Intrepid Wendell gains access to gemstones that never appear on the open market — stones so rare that they circulate only among a small circle of collectors and connoisseurs. In many cases, our clients wear gems that only a handful of people in the world have ever seen.
Wherever our journeys lead, we maintain an unwavering commitment to ethical sourcing. Jewelry meant to celebrate love, legacy, or personal triumph must rest on a foundation of integrity. The Intrepid Wendell works only with partners who uphold responsible mining practices and fair labor standards, ensuring transparency from the moment a stone leaves the earth.
Most people will never visit the places where their gemstones originate. They will never meet the artisan who first shaped them.
The Intrepid Wendell makes that journey on your behalf.
When your finished piece is finally placed in your hands, it carries far more than beauty. It carries distant landscapes, centuries of craftsmanship, and the story that inspired its creation.
It is not simply jewelry.
It is an expedition made tangible.
